Lakadong Turmeric Farmer P. Nongdkhar

Can you tell us about yourself and your journey into farming?

My name is P. Nongdkhar, from West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, India. I’ve been involved in farming since childhood, learning from my parents, particularly Turmeric farming, which has been passed down through generations.

How long have you been farming Lakadong Turmeric?

While I grew up familiar with Lakadong Turmeric, I began cultivating it in bulk in 2019. My parents grew it in small quantities, but the Lakadong Mission project in 2018 provided seeds and knowledge that helped me start large-scale farming.

Can you describe the process of growing Lakadong Turmeric?

Lakadong Turmeric requires careful cultivation, especially with climate change. I clear the fields in March, soak seeds before planting, and clean the rhizomes in July and August. Harvesting happens in September and October, and the rhizomes are sun-dried and ready for sale by January.

What are the main challenges you face?

Access to markets is a challenge. We handle everything from growing to processing, but without proper market access, getting fair prices is difficult.

What are your future plans?

I aim to continue growing high-quality Lakadong Turmeric and expand my market reach, while also inspiring other young farmers in my community.

How has farming Lakadong Turmeric impacted your life?

Farming Lakadong Turmeric has brought recognition and pride. It has improved my family’s economic situation and encouraged others in the community to take up this valuable crop.

What do you enjoy most about farming? Any advice for young farmers?

I enjoy seeing the results of my hard work, especially during harvest. For young farmers, my advice is to focus on one thing and do it well, just as I did with Lakadong Turmeric.
